Hurricane Harvey damaged much of southeast Texas last weekend (and even today in east Texas and western Louisiana). Houston’s two main airports, Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) were almost immediately closed down once the flooding began eclipsing the banks of levees and spillways in the area.

Per Jon Ostrower on Twitter, FAA and the respective Houston airports have announced that airports will reopen to commercial service today at 4pm.

Now, just to be really cautious, most airlines won’t resume full service into Houston for a while, as they must ensure that passengers have the ability to safely leave the airport and get somewhere without encountering flood waters.  Southwest, for example, will wait until Saturday to resume service out of Hobby.  Others will no doubt start with a flight or two in order to assess the situation and get feedback from local authorities.

If you have travel plans into or out of a Houston airport, contact your ticketed carrier to confirm they will be operating over the next couple of days.  Just about every airline that flies to Houston should grant a change fee waiver in case you want to change or cancel your travel plans, but the absolute best move you can make right now is talking to the airline.

Everyone take care out there, and help those in need if you’re able!
