Big news from Netflix today: they will now allow downloading of shows and movies to watch offline on your device!

This is big news for travelers who spend lots of time on airplanes.  Even though in-flight entertainment systems have improved by leaps and bounds (surprisingly led by the US carriers), you never know when you’ll be stuck on an old 757 flying across the Atlantic Ocean.  Netflix subscribers now have the ability to download shows to their device to watch whenever they want (subject to certain restrictions of course).

The Verge dug in and discovered a pretty solid list of shows and movies you can watch (this isn’t everything that’s available, but good enough to get many of us started):

  • Stranger Things
  • Star Trek (all of the TV shows)
  • Breaking Bad
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Hot Fuzz

What about Amazon Prime Video?

Like I’ve mentioned before, a membership to Amazon Prime includes membership in a service very similar to Netflix called Amazon Prime Video.  The catalogs are different between the two, but Amazon has The Grand Tour, which decides it for me (I recently cancelled my Netflix subscription as a result).  The great news is that Amazon Prime Video already allows you to download certain content.  If you’ve never tried Amazon Prime and would like a free 30-day trial, you can click the following link to sign up: Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free TrialInvalid request error occurred.

Summing it up

It’s great to see Netflix match what their competition is doing and give Stranger Things fanatics yet another way to binge on their new favorite show 🙂

It’s important to note that you’ll need to download these movies and shows in advance of when you’d like to watch them offline (in case that wasn’t obvious) but this will no doubt make many a car ride or plane trip much more enjoyable for travelers.
