DJI continues to innovate the consumer and professional drone world and announced two new drones today: the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom.
First off: whoa
These are two drones with two very different feature sets.
The Mavic 2 Pro has a Hasselblad-branded camera with a 1″ sensor with a fixed focal length of 28mm with up to f2.8 aperture. It has an electronic shutter and 20 megapixels, very similar to the Phantom 4 Pro that I love so much.
The Mavic 2 Zoom has a 2x optical zoom. Unlike the Pro it has 12 megapixels, which is a pretty good tradeoff for the zoom capability in my opinion.
Both of these are available in an incredibly portable frame.
Here’s the DJI infographic:
What about video?
Yep, both have the typical 4K UHD capability. The Pro has M-Log, HDR, and 10-bit video capture. The Zoom gets a bump in bitrate (up to 100mb/s bitrate).
The new Mavics will have 4 hyperlapse modes that capture hyperlapses in camera! Hyperlapses are notoriously difficult so this is an incredibly cool piece of kit.
Nice, but how much will it be?
The new Mavics are available NOW, the DJI website says they’ll ship as soon as payment is confirmed! The Mavic 2 Pro will retail for $1449 and the Mavic 2 Zoom will retail for $1249. These are more expensive, sure, but I think it’s a logical progression of price. The next generation Phantom will probably come in at the $2000 price point so the Mavic 2 series will be the new “prosumer” drone with the Phantom series moving more towards a lower-end professional level.
So are you kicking yourself for getting the Mavic Air instead of waiting?
Eh, a bit. My Phantom 4 Pro is my main photography drone and the Mavic Air was going to be my travel drone but it’s really hard to resist this incredible new drone. The combo of a camera system similar to the Phantom 4 Pro and the portability of the Mavic Air (ok maybe a little bigger) is a little hard to resist.
I bought a Mavic 2 Pro! I’m really hoping it arrives soon because I have a huge trip coming up which will be in the absolutely perfect setting for a new drone!
